Voulkanou Monastery

The Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Voulkano[3] is the largest Monastery in Messinia with the greatest historical importance. The Monastery flourished during the Turkish occupation. The complex is surrounded by cell buildings and auxiliary spaces. The catholicon was built in 1701 and took its current form in the early 20th century. It is a domed cruciform temple that had remarkable frescoes inside, which were destroyed by Ibrahim and covered with lime in 1882.
